Dubai, UAE-- (SBWIRE) -- 02/03/2010 -- Eton Institute, Dubai's leading language training & professional development institute have commenced registrations for the ‘Introduction to Signing' course, the first public Sign Language course to be launched in Dubai. This visually based course is a part of Eton Institute's CSR initiative to break communication barriers between the deaf and the hearing members of society. A part of the proceeds from the course will be donated to the Dubai Centre for Special Needs to further their cause.

Dr. Eli Abi Rached, Director, Eton Institute commented: "In linguistic terms, Sign Language is as rich and complex as any oral language, despite commonly held misconceptions that it is not a ‘real' language. On the contrary, it is a language which can communicate a wealth of expression and personality that surpasses even conventional languages. This is because unlike oral languages which are liner and can convey only one sound at a time, Sign Language is visual and can paint a whole scene at once with a combination of gestures, facial expressions and body language."

Application of Sign Language go far beyond being able to communicate with the deaf and hearing impaired. It can open doors for communication with children having disorders such as Autism, Apraxia or Down's syndrome or with people who experience any language processing challenge such as stroke victims or cerebral palsy patients. It is also essential for those working in high noise environments such as concerts, factories and construction sites or those working in quiet environments such as recording studios, libraries and hospitals.

The ‘Introduction to Signing' course based on the American Sign Language (ASL) standard will teach students everything they need to begin using Sign Language in practical, everyday situations. Using a fun, step by step approach, the course will cover essential topics such as talking about family, planning a party, deaf etiquette, popular deaf expressions and other tips to help sign like a pro.

The beginner-level ‘Introduction to Signing' course will involve 30 hours of interactive learning over a duration of 5 weeks. Classes will be conducted from 14 February – 18 March, three times a week, on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays with the option of afternoon or evening timings.
