Montmorency, VIC -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/15/2014 -- It all started with the invention of the phonoautograph in 1857 by Leon Scott. It was the world’s ever first device to record sound. Thomas Edison’s phonogaphi cylinder then followed. It was then capable of playing back recorded sounds. Interesting as it seems, the first ever disc jockey in the world was first heard in 1909. He is Ray Newby of California.

Disc jockey as a profession saw the light in the 1930s with Jimmy Savile as the host in the world’s first ever DJ dance party. The use of turntables in allowing continuous music to be played was done by Savile too. Whiskey A Go-Go in Paris, which was the first discoteque was first seen in 1947.

Radio DJs started to build their profession in the 1950s. They then hosted sock hops for kids throughout the country. Jamaicans had their own share in the history of disk jockeying. In the same decade, they were throwing huge dance parties with their beats being blasted from big PA systems. It was also the same decade when equipment used by DJs started to progenize. The United States and Europe championed the industry in making equipment used by the DJ industry. Mixers were invented then allowing DJs to manage their tunes.

Francisco Grasso in 1969 made beatmatching famous where there was a never-ending mixing of songs and unending dance tunes.

However, just like any other industry, the DJ world experienced a sag in the late 60s with the inclination of parties to the streets.

1970s was the era of experimentation with New York as the cradle of it. DJ Kool Herc in 1973 became famous and was named as the father of hip-hop. He was known for mixing two identical records simultaneously and it was then known as the “break”. At that time, DJs no longer needed to choose the songs to play. They were then given the chance to act as artists and musicians maneuvering songs and producing novel and stimulating beats that people can listen to for hours. 1970s was also the same age when bands started to sprang with the production of their own music being created electronically from beginning to end.

The disco era was also given birth in the 1970s. The scratching technique was a product of an accidental discovery by hip=hop DJ Grand Wizard in 1975. The moving of the record up and down created a warping sound.

House music was pioneered in 1980s and it started in The Warehouse, a club in Chicago where DJs’ spinning moves innovated a novel type of music. Frankie Knuckles was the known resident DJ there and the house music that he started in that era is still one of the most famous genres of electronic dance music that is still existing up to this day.

Raging and acid house – this was how the music of the 1990s can be described. More like a house music, acid music can be distinguished with its emphasis on cyclic hooks and trance-like sounds. This age brough DJ profession into the limelight again with celebrities joining in the scene. The status was made more famous in Europe. Digital music became even more famous, thus the creation of mp3 format and internet radio.

Then came the 21st century which even catapulted the DJ industry. The era of 2000 up to the present continues to evolve and is making use of the history of DJ world in further innovating their craft. With DJs trying out on a variety of filters and effects to produce more strident and noisy dance beats, mash-up hitting the music scene intensely, and new catchy sounds, indeed, the world of disc jockey, most especially thriving DJ businesses like Discosource Proessional DJs are expected to flourish more in the future.
