Subsurface drip irrigation offers a number of advantages when in comparison to traditional irrigation.
Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/29/2016 -- A report from Kansas State University lists a number of advantages to subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems that other irrigation systems can't match.
For people living where water is tightly managed, the primary benefit is more efficient water use. These systems drip water underground and next to the plant root system, therefore there's far less waste.
"Here in LA, water conservation is a major issue," said Carmen Cook, owner of FloraFlex™ a company who makes multiple subsurface drippers and subsurface drip irrigation systems. "We can't afford water waste. Some places may seem to have an endless supply of water but we don't have that luxury nor do we believe it to be responsible to knowingly waste such a valuable resource. We should all do our part to conserve our resources."
The KSU report also addressed runoff. SDI reduces runoff so fertilizers and pesticides are not carried out of the field and into streams. Deep soil percolation, a byproduct of overhead irrigation, is also reduced.
"Using a SDI, you deliver exact amounts of moisture where it's needed," Cook said. "You don't have to water everything for the plant to get what it needs. What you want is to deliver water and nutrients straight to your roots and enjoy all of the benefits that come with it."
Having the ability to deliver precision watering benefits the plants. Under watering can kill plants the same as over watering can. Cook said careful monitoring of soil or other media conditions allows the grower to target the plants that need to be fed and those that don't. For example if you are growing in a pot or rockwool and you feel that, the plant is still heavy you can wait until it becomes lighter to feed it.
"It's also easy to manage. Once a system is automated you can feed the entire thing with a flip of a switch or set it on timers." Cook said. "There's energy savings right there."
