Manhattan, NY -- (SBWire) -- 02/27/2014 --Despite only being 12 years old age, Chris Harris of Queens, NY, managed to amass a small fortune after learning how to sell beats online.
His annual income has now exceeded his mother’s, Carmen, who works as a cashier at a local grocery store. His love for making music came at an early age.
He said “I love making rap beats. I’ve been doing it since I was 8, and I want the world to hear my music.”
Carmen worked endless hours not only to make ends meet, but to also provide her son with music production equipment that she hopes will one day bring him success. That day came sooner than expected.
She said “I got him a laptop and a MIDI keyboard. At first I was reluctant because of how young he was at the time, but he was so insistent, so I thought ‘you know what? It’s better to start learning early anyway.’”
Chris would come back from school, jump straight on his laptop and remain there, working on his beats until the late hours of the night. He would use a beat making software called ‘Fruity Loops’ and look up tutorials on Youtube which gave him invaluable tips and techniques.
The first few years, he was simply experimenting and honing his beat making skills while having fun at the same time, but he wanted to showcase his talent and make a bit of pocket money to purchase new equipment.
“I wanted to buy an MPC machine but they were like $400 and my Mom couldn’t afford it, so I knew that I needed to sell my beats because I was still too young to get a job.” he said.
Although Chris had experience in making beats, he didn’t know where to start when it came to selling them. The only thing he knew was that he wanted to sell them to the thousands of aspiring independent rappers online.
He vigorously read through a multitude of articles and observed how others did it. He came to the conclusion that if he needed to make a name for himself, then he would need his own website as well as using other popular music selling platforms such as SoundClick.
“I knew how to make beats, but I didn’t know how to build a website and put my music up for sale, but I found an online course that teaches you and asked my mom to help me buy it.” He recalls.
After seeing her son’s progress, Carmen had no issues with spending the small monthly subscription fee to buy him the specialized course that would accelerate his status from beats maker to beats seller.
That course was ‘How To Sell Your Beats Online Like A Pro’ by Mike Lightner, an Internet Marketing course custom fitted for music producers.
Chris said “I stopped making beats to study the course everyday after school, and even got my homework done. It was a bit hard at first because there was a lot to learn and I am still learning, but now I understand internet marketing much more so it’s kinda easy now.”
It only took him 6 months to have a high converting website and online brand that generates him a mid-level four figures per month from selling his own beats. Having that kind of money at such a young age needs some sort of management, which his mother happily takes care of.
“Chris got the MPC he wanted plus a few other things, but I’m helping him look after his money so that he has enough saved for when he’s a bit older.” Said Carmen.
