Atlanta, GA -- (SBWire) -- 05/25/2017 --Darwin Johnson, the Atlanta workers compensation lawyer and head of The Law Offices of Darwin Johnson, wrote an article available to view on his website about flat tire safety. In the write-up, Johnson explained the necessary steps one should take to safely change a flat tire on the side of a busy highway or roadway.
"Flat tires are a pain, and what's more, changing one can put you in a dangerous situation," said Johnson.
His first recommendation is to put the emergency flashers on the moment a tire goes flat. "Some people don't even know where their hazard light button is located," said Johnson. "It's important to familiarize yourself with where that is." Hazard lights will indicate to other drivers that one is in an emergency situation, and tells them to yield the right of way to the vehicle that needs to pull over to the shoulder.
Johnson also urged drivers to pull over to as safe a location as possible. "For a flat tire situation, that means pulling fully onto the shoulder or breakdown lane. Try to stay on pavement to avoid sinking, and never lift a car up on an uneven surface," said Johnson.
Johnson also recommended that drivers invest in triangular reflective markers in case of an emergency. Those items are helpful to inform passing drivers of the situation, leaving them with ample time to move out of the way.
Finally, Johnson said that drivers should follow their owner's manuals when taking the steps to change the tires themselves. After the work is completed, they should wait for a large clearing to reenter the roadway, and stay in the slow vehicle lane until a full sized replacement is made.
