Bridgeton, MO -- (SBWire) -- 03/19/2014 --Missouri attorney Jeffrey M. Witt has been arrested under suspicion of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft in New York City after disappearing from the St. Louis area in October of 2013. According to the indictment filed in federal court, Witt enlisted the help of a female client in order to fraudulently obtain a $100,000 line of credit against another woman’s house without her knowledge. Upon receiving the funds, Witt deposited $60,000 into his law firm’s account and used the money for his personal use. Stltoday.com reports that FBI agents arrested Witt at John F. Kennedy International Airport after he arrived on a flight from Istanbul, Turkey on Friday, March 7th.
These are not the first issues Witt had been facing, according to reports. His law license had been temporarily suspended on December 12, 2013, after the Missouri Supreme Court determined that there was probable cause to believe that he has committed professional misconduct and that he posed a substantial threat of irreparable harm to the public. Among the misconduct of which Witt is accused is lying to clients and judges, mishandling funds, failing to file necessary documents, and missing deadlines. According to the Stltoday.com report, Witt recently was ticketed in Clayton for driving under the influence, and herecently had a nearly $1,000,000 judgment entered against him in a malpractice case.
In accordance with the rules of the Missouri Bar, attorney Kenneth Carp was appointed trustee of Witt’s practice. Mr. Carp’s duties include inventorying active files and distributing them to clients and distributing trust funds to clients or other parties.
