Winky, who lives in the Washington, D.C., metro area, has been using color in her art for years as an outlet for her emotions as she's struggled with depression. It therefore came as no surprise to her when adult coloring books began to dominate the Amazon best seller lists, many of them marketed for relaxation and stress relief.
But Winky warns that most adult coloring books provide little, if any, information about how to use them effectively for therapeutic ends. Some even offer misinformation that could undermine colorists' efforts to de-stress. "The supposed truisms that we believed for a long time about certain colors' effects on human psychology, behavior, and emotions have been exploded by recent research," Winky says. "It's misleading to say, for example, that cool colors like greens and blues are calming while warm colors like red are stimulating."
In her new books in the Colorful Coloring Books series, Winky sets the record straight, explaining that any given color will affect different people differently, or even the same person when the context or situation changes. She urges colorists in her step-by-step introductions to "take their color temperature" at each sitting, an activity she designed to have both visual and tactile components, and to devise unique strategies for color use based on their immediate goals and the insights provided by recent art therapy and color psychology research.
