Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWire) -- 02/18/2014 --Every person on a diet has good and bad days, or moments of weakness when they reach for unhealthy meals or snacks, but recent research has shown that there may be a time when we’re more prone to bad decisions. Seasonal Berries released a study that showed most people are likely to reach for and crave unhealthy foods in the late afternoon/early evening hours.
Afternoon cravings appeared to be the most common ones in a study conducted in the U.K., showing that at least one-third of people give into their cravings for junk food such as chips, cake, or chocolate, during the afternoon hours. There are numerous factors that can contribute to this, including workplace practices, stress, and a common dip in energy that happens at this time of the day.
Many blame other people when it comes to their diet failures – unsupportive partners providing snacks or not offering supportive meal options, co-workers who bring in snacks and have them easily within reach, or just a general malaise and lapse in energy that comes after a long day at work can be reasons we reach for sugary sources of energy.
“Sticking to a diet, for some people, can be tricky and understanding that 4:12pm is the time people crave sweet and unhealthy snacks, means that you should be prepared for this so you don’t ruin a diet plan,” Nutritionist Dora Walsh advises. Her advice is to prepare foods and snacks the night before to help fight temptation, and to keep an eye on portion size or find low-calorie snacks to keep hunger satiated during this time.
Making sure the body is adequately hydrated is another way to keep cravings satisfied, and if work is having a special treat day perhaps taking a break and heading out for a little fresh air during that time is a wise choice. This will also help reduce stress levels, which can also make fighting sugary cravings easier.
