Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWire) -- 01/24/2014 --Determining the number of calories one should consume in order to stimulate weight loss is actually much easier than it seems. There is a simple three-step formula available that can be adapted to any person of any age, and several methods one can use to determine how active they need to be in order to improve their physical health.
Known as the Harris-Benedict equation, this method is used by doctors and trainers to assist their clients in determining caloric intake for their diets. The equation involves determining the basil metabolic weight (BMR) and figuring out level of activity to finalize an approximate amount of calories that should be consumed each day for weight loss.
To figure this number, take 655 and add it to the result of a person’s weight times 4.35, then add the person’s height times 4.7, and subtract 4.7 times the person’s age. So for example, a 32-year-old woman who is 5’5” and weighs 190lbs would have a BMR of 1,636 calories per day.
Activity levels for a person can range from sedentary to light activity, moderate activity, and very active ranges. Each activity level has a corresponding number: sedentary is 1.4, lightly active 1.5, moderately active 1.6, and very active 1.9. Multiply the activity number by the BMR determined by the equation above to determine total caloric needs. For the example above, the 32-year-old woman with a moderately active lifestyle would multiply 1,636 by 1.6 to equal 2,617 calories per day.
This number is the total number of calories the body needs to maintain its current weight. To lose, one will need to eat less than this amount. To determine how many calories to cut one needs to take into account the type of diet they’re consuming (high-protein, vegetarian, ect), the type of exercise they engage in, and how much they wish to lose.
Trainers and doctors can assist in determining the final number of how many calories a person must cut in order to lose weight, but the equation above can move a person in the right step to finding out this elusive information.
