San Diego, CA -- (SBWire) -- 02/26/2014 --Everybody wants to learn how to write a book that will help them quit their job and enjoy a full-time career. But, according to Michael Rogan author of the new book, "How to Write a Book That Doesn't Suck (and Will Actually Sell)," most beginning writers focus on the wrong thing when it comes to learning how to write a non fiction book of their dreams.
And that is: they focus on one book.
"The days are over when authors could crank out that single non-fiction, how-to book that covered every single area of a topic and make a living from it," says Rogan. "It's all about writing more, shorter books...and then promoting the hell out of those books."
And by shorter, Rogan means quite shorter. As in somewhere in the 10K-20K range. Which equates to about 40 pages in length.
But Rogan contends that if would-be writers can get past that critical English-teacher voice in their head that tells them 40 pages isn't long enough for a book they might actually make a living with their writing with shorter books. (And not worrying so much about mastering the steps of writing a book that's significantly longer.)
"Forget the fact that shorter books are easier to write, and that I can crank out five of these suckers in the same time it takes a more traditional author to finish that ONE single book they've been tussling with for a year," says Rogan. "The truth is that in this fast-paced, Kindle-buying, iPad-filling world we live in: people want shorter books they can get through quickly."
"So why not give the people what they want."
Rogan suggests writers come up with a large topic they are interested in -- "Don't write about something that bores you. It won't work" -- and then break that large topic into sub-topics which can be spun into different books.
This not only provides numerous sources of possible income, but makes it much easier to promote the books on the whole. "Having five books gives your future readers a lot of touchpoints to discover you. Not to mention the fact that you come as the go-to expert in your field," says Rogan.
"And once you've got that: you can sell a hell of a lot of books."
