Locksmith Education
To become a licensed locksmith, applicants must complete a 48 hour basic locksmith course like the one Associated Locksmiths of America offers, attend an approved locksmith trade school including a specific curriculum consisting of approximately 600 hours of class time or work for a licensed lock shop for one year full-time.
To maintain a Locksmith license businesses also need to complete continuing education units every year. Continuing Education Courses requires Locksmiths to take a total of sixteen hours of continuing education every two years. In the first year, seven hours must be in a subject matter that relates to locksmithing, and one hour must cover ethics. In the second year, eight hours in a subject matter that relates to locksmithing. Following the initial registration period, Qualified Managers may take a one hour course devoted to changes in laws and rules applicable to the security industry, as a substitute for the ethics requirement.
