Lake Forest, CA -- (SBWire) -- 10/26/2015 --Xarelto or the Rivaroxaban which is one of what is said to be the latest and best alternative anticoagulant medication in the market today has been reviewed just recently by Health Canada in terms of its safety. However, the safety review summary released last August 26 this year investigated Xarelto in two separate studies and was found out to be linked in the development of liver injury in the 16 subjects. The purpose of the research conducted by the department was focused on the possibilities of Xarelto increasing the risk for liver problems and injuries. However, they could not arrive at a conclusion to this hypothesis because some of the documentation contains incomplete information. But because of the allegations and controversial issues that Xarelto is being involved at, Health Canada decided to further study the drug and asked professional health care providers as well as the patients using Xarelto to document and report any incidences of liver injuries that could possibly be related to the anticoagulant drug being investigated.
However, during liver damage the use of Xarelto to treat these medical conditions, there have been a vast number of reports that the anticoagulant medication has been increasing the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding which have led to fatal complications and to some patients, death has been the worst outcome.
As per documentation from the two separate studies that have raised the red flag on the use of Xarelto being the cause of liver damage and injury, here are the findings:
In the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal, two (2) patients have been reported to develop serious liver damage during the intake of Xarelto and this is manifested by the extremely elevated transaminase activity levels as well as hyperbilirubinemia. However, these patients have recovered quickly after the use of Xarelto has been stopped. The authors of the study revealed that from the year 3008 and 2013, there have been 42 cases of liver injury possibly due to the Xarelto treatment and this has also been reported to the Swiss Agency of Therapeutic Products. And as a conclusion to the research, severe symptomatic liver injury is associated with the use of Rivaroxaban.
In the Journal of Hepatology, the second study about the use of Xarelto and its association with developing liver damage or injury has been published and there have been 14 reported cases. In this study, there has been a substantial number of hepatic adverse reactions in patients and the use of Xarelto has been the suspected cause. However, the authors have recommended further studies to be conducted and advised physicians to observe symptoms of liver damage and injury in patients taking Rivaroxaban.
As a summary, Health Canada has received a total number of 61 patients that have been reported to have experienced liver-related harmful effects while they were taking Xarelto although this can not be actually pointed out because of the fact that there isn't a clear cause-and-effect relationship between the drug and the symptoms. In addition to this, in the World Health Organization's data there have been around 431 liver injury cases documented and 23 of those do not take any other medications other than Xarelto.
