Pasadena, CA -- (SBWire) -- 08/23/2010 -- The Texas Workforce Commission has reported that the Houston metro area saw over 17,000 job losses in July. This was after five consecutive months of job gains for the region.
The Houston metro area’s unemployment rate for July was 8.8 percent, which was not seasonally adjusted. The unemployment rate for Texas in July after adjusting for seasonal variations was 8.2 percent. It was the same in June.
One of the main reasons for high number of layoffs was the slashing of jobs by the school districts. The schools had to let go of drivers, cafeteria staff and several other support staff. As of now, there are no signs as to exactly how many are going to be hired back. Even private schools cut around 1,000 jobs, while the restaurant industry eliminated around 800 jobs.
The main sector that added substantial jobs was the oil industry and its ancillary sectors, both of which added around 800 jobs. There are opportunities available in several other sectors according to HoustonMetroCrossing, a niche job aggregator site, focusing only on the Houston metro region. The site has been able to garner over 7,000 jobs in seven days. The sectors with the most openings are: accounting (1,415), financial services (1,574), information technology (2,103), and various blue-collar jobs (1,995).
