Newport, Wales -- (SBWire) -- 12/01/2014 --Running a PC or laptop with expired security software could potentially pose the same risk as operating a system without security software at all.
According to Microsoft Security Intelligence Report 17, non domain computers running Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 with updated real-time security software reported a 0.6 percent infection rate, whereas systems with expired protections reported a 2.2 percent infection rate, and systems with no protections reported a 2.3 percent infection rate.
Roughly 10 percent of non-domain Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 computers are running expired security software. Customers are encouraged to upgrade to an newer version due to factors such as compliance, lack of independent software vendor support and hardware manufacturer support.
Customers are recommended to upgrade; however, customers should back up their files and have disks for any programs that may need to be reinstalled. Depending on what version Windows customers are running on, some might find it more worthwhile purchasing a new computer as their system might not even meet the requirements to upgrade.
Purchasing a new PC poses the question to what customers should do with their previous one in order to prevent disclosure of personal data including: bank details, private photos, business plans, business/private accounts, emails and personal information about family and business practices. Disclosure of such information can then lead to a data breach resulting in excessive fines and damaged brand identity, to name a few.
Companies wishing to upgrade or change their computers should look at following guidance from the Information Commissioners Office on the proper disposal of IT data bearing assets. The ICO recommends utlising a CESG Certified Product to erase your end of life data.
