London, England -- (SBWire) -- 02/10/2015 --Studies conducted by the Health and Safety Executive reveal in excess of 8,000 occupational related cancer deaths each year in Great Britain with greater than half of those being attributed to past exposure to asbestos. This substance is also responsible for an estimated 600 annual deaths resulting from asbestosis. Though the use of asbestos has vastly declined since the discovery of its far reaching health risks in the early 1940's, it continues to linger in some older structures.
In an effort to foster projected downward trends in the number of asbestos related deaths across the United Kingdom, Russell Shrives of RJS WasteManagement has launched a campaign to increase public awareness of the importance of asbestos surveys and promptly addressing the presence of this deadly substance. Shrives confirmed, "Our fully insured and qualified surveyors conduct testing in accordance with all national safety standards, but detecting asbestos is only the first step in the process. Once it has been found, further actions need to be taken in order to truly eliminate the risk of exposure."
Unlike less harmful building and production materials, asbestos can not simply be cleared away and sent to a landfill or recycling center. To do so would leave behind carcinogenic particles as well as spread them to other areas. In certain instances, the asbestos will need to be removed; however, this action must be carried out in a clean and safety-conscious manner. It must be disposed of under these same standards.
Asbestos found in deteriorating condition or likely to be disturbed may warrant encapsulation. In these cases, the material will not be removed; rather, it will be sealed off from its surroundings to prevent exposure to damaging particles. When remaining in good condition and not prone to being unsettled through routine activity, the substance may only need to be labeled and monitored for deterioration.
Said Shrives, "In addition to seeking out the asbestos lurking in area homes and businesses, our team of waste management experts helps design effective plans for dealing with the problem. Our hope is that by offering these services to residents of London, Oxford and the surrounding areas, we can do our part to eliminate cases of lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis and other related conditions for future generations.
