Study Determines That Cucumber Disease Controls Might Also Be Viable for Pigs, the Pendle Pig Responds

Lancashire, England -- (SBWire) -- 05/19/2015 --Leading UK hog roasting company, The Pendle Pig, has recently commented on the upcoming British Pig Executive (BPEX) innovation conference, which plans to showcase new experimental methods of controlling disease for pigs, including a study that links cucumber disease control with pig disease control.

The pig industry has started looking at other sectors to help find cures to disease, and a link has been made between the growing of cucumbers and the growing of pigs, in green houses and ventilated buildings respectively. The areas being studied include human medicine, aquatics and horticulture.

The BPEX conference is an annual event, and the event focusses on science, management techniques and technologies, allowing those who attend to learn about new possibilities from studying other industries. Existing techniques will also be detailed at the event, so anyone can make best use of what's currently available to help control disease for pigs.

University of Worcester research scientist, Alison Wakeham, said, 'There are massive similarities believe it or not, between growing cucumbers in green houses and growing pigs in ventilated buildings. Problems with disease (in cucumbers) for example, come in from outside. There's also a need to clean effectively between batches to prevent cross contamination and to identify infectious diseases promptly to reduce production problems.'

Technical innovation manager of BPEX, Charlotte West, said, 'The field of diagnostics has expanded significantly and there is a lot we can learn from other industries as well as our own sector. It is particularly important because of new and emerging diseases on the horizon, as well as the need to pinpoint more accurately and treat infectious organisms to help manage our use of antibiotics.'
