Highlights

The economic strategy, aimed at the expansion of the GCC economy from oil based growth to other sectors, formed the foundation for the boom in the construction industry during 2005-08. The governments’ policy reforms to alleviate economic restrictions in the industrial sector, in turn drove demand for infrastructure development. A rise in population levels and increasing tourism also added to the demand for infrastructure development. In addition, the authorisation of private participation in real estate development and efforts to encourage foreign property investment in the region has contributed to residential market growth. However, in 2009 the industry recorded slowdown in construction activity, as a result of weakened global investor confidence and the fall in oil prices. The recovery of the same is expected to re-activate industry growth over the forecast period.
