Dallas, TX -- (SBWire) -- 02/15/2011 -- An Ethernet Switch is a computer networking device that divides a network into multiple segments and acts as selective bridges among these segments. This enables simultaneous connection of multiple pairs of computers, which do not communicate with other pairs for network bandwidth. The increased use of communication networks in enterprises and businesses has resulted in an increase in the traffic intensity over networks. This has given rise to the need to develop devices such as Ethernet switches that help in reducing bandwidth wastage. These switches have logical circuits (store MAC addresses), which direct the traffic towards the network segments between the source and the destination; thus, utilizing lesser bandwidth.
Presently, Ethernet switches are being adopted by carrier service providers as they use separate wires to send and receive data; thus, supporting full duplex mode operation (i.e. a computer can send and receive data at the same time). Further, these switches also increase network security as lesser number of users are able to access other user’s data. Thus, these switches offer better management capabilities as they can control the information flow between two users, and help in reducing network problem issues.
However, these switches have challenges, such as clock synchronization issues and high developmental costs.
The increasing IT related traffic is one of the major drivers for the Ethernet Switch market. With globalization, the need for data collaboration and video conferencing for businesses and enterprises has increased considerably. Further, downloading information and video streaming is on the rise at business and consumer levels, with an increase in services like long distance learning. In addition, with services like Cloud computing and data center outsourcing gaining popularity, movement of data outside the corporate data center has been driving the market for Ethernet Switches.
