Senior Lady Pilot of Jet Airways Honoured by Civil Aviation Ministry

As part of the centenary celebrations of Civil Aviation in India, the Ministry of Civil Aviation honoured Capt. Sonica Chhabra – a senior pilot with Jet Airways, for being the first Indian woman Instructor and Examiner on Boeing 737 aircraft. Capt. Chhabra was felicitated at a special event at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi yesterday.

The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Smt. Ambika Soni presented the award to Capt. Sonica Chhabra. Present on the occasion were Shri Vyalar Ravi, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs and Civil Aviation, and Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan, Member of Parliament, at the special event which honoured women achievers in aviation over the last century.

Capt Sonica Chhabra joined Jet Airways in 1992 and has over 11,465 flying hours to her credit. She was the first woman pilot to be hired by a private Indian airline in December 1992, becoming a Commander in February 1997. Capt. Chhabra is also an examiner type rated for conducting tests on the Boeing 737s, having become an instructor in 2006 and an Examiner in December 2008.
