London, England -- (SBWire) -- 10/28/2015 --A new garden is set to open in 2019 in the heart of Greater Manchester, adjoining the Bridgewater Canal in Worsley, Salford. The new 156-acre garden will be the fifth Royal Horticultural Society garden in Britain.
Others gardens in Surrey, Devon, Essex and Carr have already had record visits and boosted the society to reach its highest annual membership in its 211-year history. With 445,000 members, the RHS knows that Garden Bridgewater will benefit its business and breathe new life into the hustle and bustle of the Northern Powerhouse.
Situated in the gardens of Worsley New Hall, the charity are expecting more than one million new visitors to the site within a decade of opening. It will be a product of Vision, an investment programme providing £100m over a ten year span to make the UK greener and more environmentally friendly.
Salford City Council have agreed to the plans and will work in collaboration with Peel Land and Property and the RHS in building the new landscaped masterpiece. RHS Director Sue Biggs said in a recent interview with The Express said the new garden will "bring beauty, knowledge, social cohesion, heal and wellbeing, employment and enjoyment to millions more people within Salford, Greater Manchester and the surrounding regions."
Included in the development will be a restoration of the Walled Kitchen Garden which will feature recreated historical features and a Learning Centre, expected to attract thousands of school children to learn about horticulture and gardening.
