Scottsdale, AZ -- (SBWire) -- 08/17/2016 --Some leading skin cancer prevention experts are calling a federal decision to not step up medical screening for patients a rash conclusion.
Licensed aesthetician, Natalya Borakowski -- owner of Desert Bloom Skin Care Center in Scottsdale, AZ -- believes skin cancer screening should be included in annual exams administered by general physicians. "This is an easily treatable disease. If left untreated, it can cause severe deformity and even death," she said. "So yes, the screening must be done."
Borakowski and other leading skin cancer screening experts across the country are puzzled over the recent decision by The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. The federal panel, consisting of primary care physicians and epidemiologists, concluded that there is no evidence to suggest skin cancer screening by family doctors will reduce a patient's odds of being stricken by melanoma. The task force's findings also determined that the vast majority of skin cancer cases are non-melanoma related and rarely end in death.
Despite these findings, Borakowski believes general physicians -- especially in hot climate states -- can play a critical role in preventing skin cancer. "Doctors have more than enough training to identify suspicious skin lesions. These exams would require only two or three additional minutes. If a potentially cancerous situation is identified, the general physician should then explain the potential risks of treatment versus non-treatment and suggest that they make an appointment to see a dermatologist."
