Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWire) -- 11/03/2015 --Those who are interested in plays and especially, those that belong to the tragedy and black humour genre, may be excited with the news that FAUSTAFF or The Mockery of the Soul written by the Mexican playwright Diego Sosa will be staged from Wednesday 18th November to Sunday 6th December 2015 at The Cockpit Theatre, London.
FAUSTAFF is a play that is inspired by the Faustian myth but set in the modern world and seen through the eyes of a female character. Some more good news is full casting for the play has been announced. The cast includes Lesley Lightfoot (Gily Jacoby), Jonson Wilkinson (Olivier Simone / Ponton / Andrew), Eddie Chamberlin (Chorus), Bernard O'Sullivan (Detective Paterson), Charles Timson (Detective Virgil / Apothecary) and Alessia Gotti (María / Karla / Alice / Martha).
Both Mexican and British artists will be acting in this play that is being simultaneously produced in Mexico city as well as in London. The Mexican version is directed by the British director Frank Kaye and the British version, by the Mexican director Rodrigo Johnson.
The title of the play is a mixture of Marlowe's and Goethe's Dr. Faustus and Shakespeare's Falstaff, a mischievous character in Henry IV and The Merry Wives of Windsor. The play is the story of Gily Jacoby who becomes successful and popular due to an agreement she makes with the devil. She is able to see the future of couples, thanks to the help of the devil. With this ability, she writes successful novels that catapults her into a best-selling author. But she has to pay a heavy price for this . The heartbreaks she suffers, her ambitions and dreams turn out to be different from what she expects to be. This results in the tragedy of she becoming mad which happens to be her own prophecy.
In short, this modern tragedy is full of black humour. According to the author, the modern world is ready for a character like Faustus, who is an ambititous woman, who is driven by greed and who is ready to go to any length for achieving success. She is even ready to sacrifice her soul for this.
Staging FAUSTAFF is one among the many events that will be conducted during the Dual Year Mexico - United Kingdom 2015. The governments of United Kingdom and Mexico have agreed to celebrate 2015 as the "Year of Mexico in the United Kingdom" and the "Year of the United Kingdom in Mexico." The aim is to promote better understanding between the societies of both the countries. The Mexican version of FAUSTAFF opened at the Foro Shakespeare in Mexico DF on Monday 5th October 2015.
