London, England -- (SBWire) -- 04/28/2016 --Gardeners throughout the UK have dealt with the pesky habits of slugs and snails for many years however according to the Royal Horticultural Society there's now a creature that they dislike even more – the East Asian Box Tree Caterpillar.
Last year was the first time in almost a decade that snails and slugs did not top the UK's most troublesome pest list; instead the Royal Horticultural Society received the most enquiries based on the hedge-eating caterpillars that have been causing havoc for gardeners all over the UK.
When born the East Asian Box Tree Caterpillar is a greenish-yellow with a black head and it then grows up to 4cm, keeping its body colour and developing cool black and white stripes along the entire length of the body.
These caterpillars were first discovered to be in the UK in 2011 and if your garden has suffered from any of the following symptoms recently, they could be closer than you think:
-Flattish, pale yellow eggs overlapping one another on the bottom of box leaves
-Webbing over feeding areas
-Cocoons of white webbing spun amid twigs and leaves
Natural Stone provider London Stone are frequent commentators on garden news and a spokesperson had this to say:
"Like with slugs and snails, gardeners are now going to have to adapt their ways to work around these pests. The caterpillars can be removed by hand where possible and pheromone traps can be put in place to help monitor any adult moth activity. Another idea would be to use contemporary modern garden flags where you can in your garden and limit the number of plants you use if the caterpillars cause you too much grief."
