Atlanta, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/11/2014 -- April Royals is a mother with a cause and a reason behind it. Her son, Kory, was born premature by four months. Royals had complications with a torn cervix, and Kory came early. Royals spent four months in Egleston Childrens Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., with Kory.
“He was born on July 20th, and he left on Nov. 27th, 2007,” said April Royals, founder of the Kory Foundation.
Rather than spend her days mourning the loss of her son, she chose instead to immortalize him with a foundation in his memory. It started with a book she wrote for him in the hospital. Royal went on to publish the book, but the book led her to do more.
Thus, the Kory Foundation was born.
Started in 2012, the Kory Foundation goes to the two largest non-profit children's hospitals in Atlanta, Egleston and Scottish Rite. The foundation provides food baskets to parents and families with children in these two hospitals.
The foundation has other activities besides assisting families with meals and food. An annual balloon release for families of lost and sick children, monthly dinners and activities and parent date nights.
“The date night is a really popular event for parents. It gives them a chance to have some private alone time while still staying close by to their children. The meals or services are provided by local businesses, and our volunteer staff serves the families,” said Royal.
Each July 20th, the foundation makes a monetary donation to the two hospitals. This money is used specifically for families and their children.
The Kory Foundation is partnered with several Atlanta-area businesses, and Royal encourages anyone in the Atlanta area to patronize those businesses as a way to give back.
Those who cannot are encouraged to visit the website and make a donation. The foundation is an IRS 501(c)3 organization, so all donations are tax deductible.
There is a Facebook page, a Twitter feed and more for interested individuals. Those who cannot make donations are encouraged to visit the Facebook page and follow the Twitter feed. All activities outside of the hospitals are open to the public and free.
Additional information about the foundation and the local businesses who support it is available on the website. Visit here or contact the foundation directly here.
