Of the remarkable order, Coal From Santa Founder Alexander Belsey said, "At first we all thought it was a joke. Our company is designed to let friends prank each other at Christmas, and we thought someone was pranking us, but we managed to contact the buyer, and he assured us that he was 100% genuine, and that he really did want us to send all this coal to his friend."

Delivering such a huge quantity of coal to someone's home address, completely out of the blue, is an event that could have been fractious and difficult, but, perhaps surprisingly, the recipient took it very well. "He was more amused than anything else," said Belsey, "he was sure he knew who it was from, and said he'd be responding in kind soon. In the meantime, he'd try selling the coal in his local neighborhood."
