Eagle, ID -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/26/2014 -- Cody’s Appliance Repair owner and lead technician, Cody Husk, advises against using the self-clean feature on your oven just prior to any major cooking holiday. “Self-cleaning your oven just before any cooking event is a big mistake,” says Husk. “Many people believe that the self-clean feature cleans your oven with no effort, but this is not how it works. There is prep work involved, and a serious risk for component failure on certain models.” With over two decades of appliance repair experience, Cody Husk has seen dozens of Thanksgiving cooking disasters caused by self-cleaning models.

“We can’t say it enough: Wait until after the holiday to run the self-clean feature, or at least do it several weeks prior to any major event,” says Patty Husk, co-owner and operator of Cody’s Appliance Repair. Patty Husk explained that the self-clean cycle causes component failure because the oven’s temperature reaches the upward of 800 degrees. The most important thing to consider is timing: “If you will be relying on your oven in the next week, forgo the self-clean feature and use some good ole fashion elbow grease instead.”

During the holidays, appliance repair technicians’ schedules fill-up quickly, so same day service may not be an option. This is why, according to Husk, you should hold off on running your self-clean feature until after the cooking season is over. “Our schedulers do their very best to work customers into our schedule, but we don’t always have availability during the week leading up to the holiday.” The Husks have built their business on fast turn around time, but even the most efficient appliance repair company will be fully booked prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If you just can’t wait and decide to run the self-clean cycle anyway, Patty recommends wiping out the oven prior to cleaning. The self clean feature allows the oven to reach extreme temperatures, which means that you will have a lot of heat coming off your unit. Crumbs and food drippings can cause a smoky house and possibly result in a dangerous fire.

As a preventative measure, attempt to completely eliminate the need to use the self-clean feature by placing a cookie sheet under foods that may bubble over. This is a great way to reduce stuck on food.
