The number of people aged 65 and over in New Zealand grew by 4% over 2011-2012, which represented 14% of the total population, compared with 12% in 2007, demonstrating the ageing of the population. Therefore certain health conditions have increased in prevalence, with incontinence being a problem that affects older people in particular, due to weaker bladders and bowels and the condition affected by some surgical procedures.
