The pet enclosures retailer believes that enlisting for help through social media and the internet at large could speed up the process of reclaiming lost pets. Given the social media-inclined public, the company believes turning to social media has become more effective than plastering city lamp posts with lost pet flyers.

Some of the existing sites dedicated for such a purpose include the Queensland Lost Pet Register (QLPR), which uses Facebook and Twitter. QLPR provides a posting service run by volunteers who post and tweet sightings or lost and found cases. A paid service by LostPetFinders.com.au helps located lost pets through a wide network of organisations that include vets, councils, shelters, pounds and animal registries. The service also has a lost pet hotline. However, the service works more efficiently with registered pets.

The inability of city pounds and organisations such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals of locating the owners is largely due to a lack of information on pets. That is, most pets that get lost are highly likely unregistered. In Australia, 7.22% of the 3.41 million pets in the country get lost each year. This percentage forms part of the over 245,000 unwanted animals in Australia, 44,659 of which are euthanased ‘due to no room for adoption’, according to the Pet Industry Association of Australia. Recently, the Noosa Council reports over half of Noosa’s 7,900 dogs remain unregistered despite sending notices to dog owners to renew or take up registration. According to the council, owners can be liable for a fine of $227.00 for failing to register their dogs.

By registering our pets, we increase the probability of getting reunited with them in case they do get lost. Pets Australia recommends equipping pets with external ID in addition to microchipping. Although many pet organisations will advocate for a microchip, an external ID with a contact number is easier to see by people who might find the pet, making it easier to report lost and found incidents.
