The IIHS gave the 2016 model "good" marks on all of its criteria, which includes moderate overlap, small overlap, side impact, rear crash and roof strength.

For the small and midsize SUV categories, Johnson thought the FIAT 500x and Toyota Highlander were the best-in-class, respectively. FIATS, while relatively new to the American marketplace, are known for their extra features like night vision and brake assist, among the usual safety mechanisms. The 2016 Toyota Highlander received only four and five star ratings from the NHTSA.
