Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/21/2016 -- Entrepreneur and philanthropist Datuk Seri Jessy Lai spoke up against climate change, encouraging environmental protection methods that are easy to do in our everyday lives, in conjunction with Earth Day 2016.
"Climate change is worrying, but we can do our part in protecting the environment by taking small and simple steps in our everyday lives—these include changing our waste disposal habits, planting a pot of flower, reducing usage of water and electricity, switching to hybrid or electric cars and carpooling."
Datuk Seri Jessy Lai cited a research done by The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), showing that environmental deterioration is happening at a rate faster than ever. The world is not seeing any signs of improvement and the global average temperature last year was much warmer than previous records.
"Humans are one of the main factors causing climate change. Take one example, deforestation. Our excessive logging activities over the years have affected the world's oxygen supply, destroyed the natural habitat for aboriginals and wild animals alike, forcing migration and exploration of new lands, leading to more destruction."
Earth Day has recently gained popularity in Malaysia as a 'Save the Earth Day', where environmental protection is the theme for the day. Datuk Seri Jessy Lai emphasizes on taking small steps to help protect the environment such as avoiding usage of personal cars to turning off lights in residential and commercial areas. She further calls on for everyone, including private and public companies to do their part in answering the call to change.
Datuk Seri Jessy Lai explains that while Earth Day is a great way to spread awareness on climate change and the need to protect the environment, they key is still to ensure that people are able to sustain these efforts throughout the year.
"Turning off the lights for an additional hour in a year is definitely not as impactful as turning the lights off one additional hour per day for a whole year," said Datuk Seri Jessy Lai.
Speaking further about international campaigns across the globe, Datuk Seri Jessy Lai also mentioned about 'Trees For The Earth', a campaign by Earth Day Network plans to collaborate with governmental institutions, local environmental advocate groups, religious leaders, corporations and civil societies to help plant 800 million trees across the world by the year 2020.
Mon Space Group, a group of companies owned by Datuk Seri Jessy Lai will be one of the few companies in Malaysia advocating change on a corporate level, starting with ensuring a good number of trees planted per acreage of land, encouraging usage of clean renewable energy and to maintain good recycling habits within the company.
"Imagine what our future would be like 100 years from now if we don't take these steps to protect the environment. The time to act is now."
