Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/20/2014 -- When curtailing a diet, there are many things we cut out to become healthier. But one indulgence many keep is a diet soda habit. And while it will save a person from consuming the 140 some calories included with regular soda, there are other health reasons this dietary staple should be cut out or at least reduced for overall health.
Diet soda relieves itself of calories by using artificial sweeteners in place of real sugar. While this seems logical, artificial sweeteners are more intense in flavor that regular sugar and overtime our bodies become dulled to naturally sweet tastes and we begin to crave the false sugars our bodies have become accustomed to. This wouldn’t be all bad save for the fact that artificial sweeteners can trigger insulin increases which cause the body to store fat leading to weight gain.
In fact, this increase in insulin has been linked to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The confusion in sugars can lead to development of metabolic syndrome, and elevate the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other debilitating conditions. Not only this, consumption of diet soda can be linked to some weight gain due to the increased production of insulin that is required to combat the flux of artificial sugars in the body.
In addition to the above, diet soda has no nutritional value, especially when compared with water or even juices. When trying to improve a diet for health reasons, it’s better to pack in as many nutrient dense foods and beverages as possible rather than reaching for something that is empty of benefit. IN addition to the debilitating conditions listed above, excessive consumption of soda can break down tooth enamel and lead to dental conditions and erosion.
While diet soda can help satisfy a craving for something sweet and bubbly, it is unwise to keep it in as a staple part of any diet due to the risks to overall health and diet.
