When hotel guests are given a choice, it's evident a Do Not Disturb sign doesn't ask, “do you want room cleaning?"A new product is sending this outdated piece of cardboard where it belongs: the recycling bin.
York, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/02/2015 -- When given a clear choice, up to 85% of hotel guests are opting not to have their rooms cleaned.
"With a clean, sanitized room on arrival, very few guests want it cleaned again," says Steve Tracey, a hotelier for over 30 years.
"Modern guests really know what they want, and choice, personal privacy, and security perceptions seem to combine with green ethos to explain this astonishing statistic."
Tracey's online company, Greenguests.com, features a modern, uniquely designed product with two clear options: Green or Orange.
Green means they don't want their rooms cleaned. Orange means they do.
Tested on 100,000 guests, up to 85% chose no cleaning.
"All 1-5* hotels can save vast amounts of time, cleaning materials - and above all, labor - by using the new sign", says Tracey, noting it cannot be tampered with by other guests.
The statistic he admits, sounds incredible, but cites major changes since Do Not Disturb signs were first introduced. With todays guests having increased green awareness, "toxic cleaning chemicals and sprays alone account for drastic changes in guest preferences," says Tracey.
Then there's the tech factor.
"Today's hotel rooms are full of extremely expensive iPads, laptops, charging smartphones etc … none of which were even invented at the time."
The benefits from using the new sign extend to reputation. Intriguingly, online reviews improved, the survey finds, with hotel guests tending to be less critical. A 'no' choice to cleaning, reinforces a mindset that standards here are perfectly acceptable'.
Tracey believes his signs benefit B&Bs and guesthouses, too. Bruce Goerisch, an American who now runs a guesthouse in busy central Yorkshire, tested the Greenguests sign on hundreds of clients."It's incredible," says Goerisch."Only a handful chose to have their room cleaned, and amongst those, the majority who displayed 'please clean' only did so on the very day they were leaving!"
He's never going back to "antiquated, out of touch and out of date Do Not Disturb signs."
