DME Library knew the importance of home oxygen safety, with great risk in having serious injuries due to improper use of compressed oxygen cylinders they made sure that every individual that is using or about to use them knows that precautions and safety measures need to be practiced. The risk included in using this type of oxygen at home is very high, that is why they want to ensure that proper awareness of the correct usage of this product should be followed at all times.
Deerfield Beach, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/24/2015 -- Oxygen can save lives as it can also be the killer, being a part of the fire triangle where heat, fuel and oxygen are the primary elements of fire its potential to injure and kill is never ending. The normal room enriched with oxygen increases the heat release, energy and severity of a potential fire. With the presence of oxygen, a normally nonflammable substance can be burned easily and produce poisonous fumes rapidly that can be toxic and can cause respiratory and cardiac failure to a person.
Oxygen may be the primary source of life by each and every living organisms, it can also be a lifesaver for those who are unfortunate to have a non-working set of lungs. The use of compressed oxygen cylinder at may have been approved by the government with proper safety measures. An oxygen cylinder acts as storage vessel of compressed oxygen. Oxygen behaves rather differently from air, compressed air and other inert gases, this can be very reactive and a very efficient oxidizing agent. Pure oxygen in combination to high pressure can respond violently with common materials like grease and oil, that is why the proper and careful use of compressed oxygen cylinder is required.
On May 20, 2014, a tragic accident happened as a worker who is preparing to weld was burnt by a faulty 100-ld compressed oxygen cylinder. When the worker is in the process of opening the valve that is located between the cylinder and oxygen system, the oxygen cylinder exploded resulting to serious burns of the worker. This raises the awareness about the potentiality of serious injuries of opening compressed oxygen cylinder in a hazardous manner. Due to the compression of the oxygen, heat can be produced and improper opening of the valve can cause explosion or fire. Opening the valve within the oxygen system too quickly can result to fire or explosion especially if any contamination is already present in the system.
Control measures and precautions to protect an individual against the potential hazards of using compressed oxygen cylinder are the following;
- Following the manufacturer recommendations about the use of correct, suitable and safe components for an oxygen system is deemed important. This is the first thing one should follow to ensure safety and avoid fire or explosion of the oxygen system.
- A correct type of materials to be used with compressed oxygen system is advised to all employers and homeowners. The piping metals to be used in connection to the oxygen system must be preapproved by the system manufacturer/designer.
- All materials that is used or will be introduced to the compressed oxygen system must be cleaned and maintained to avoid contamination with flammable and non-oxygen compatible substances.
- Only approved lubricants are to be used and should be in a small possible amount.
- Applicable standards must be followed by the designer of the system. Good design can effectively reduce the possibility of fire and explosion.
