Dr. Gary J. Patronek to Discuss Animal Hoarding on VoiceAmerica Variety Channel

Elaine Birchall, host of the VoiceAmerica Variety Channel Program “Take Back Your Life: When Your Things Are Taking Over” will be joined by special guest Dr. Gary J Patronek, VMD, PhD on Wednesday October 19, 2016, to discuss Animal Hoarding.

Phoenix, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/18/2016 -- Renowned veterinarian and epidemiologist, Dr. Gary J Patronek will provide expert information on Animal Hoarding, addressing such topics as the negative impacts that the number of animals in an environment can have on a person's health and well being, options if someone knows they have too many animals, and recommendations for those who know of an animal hoarding situation.

Dr. Patronek currently works as an independent consultant, and Adjunct Professor at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts. He is a past shelter director, Vice President for Animal Welfare at the Animal Rescue League of Boston, and former Director of the Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy.

Dr. Patronek founded the Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium (HARC), a multidisciplinary group of investigators who conducted much of the initial research concerning animal hoarding. The work of HARC was instrumental in the mention of animal hoarding in the new hoarding disorder included in DSM-5 in 2013.

Dr. Patronek has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and textbook chapters, many of which deal with animal welfare and shelter issues. He was one of the authors and editors of the Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters put forth under the auspices of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, and is one of three co-editors for the new book Animal Maltreatment: Forensic Mental Health Issues and Evaluations published by Oxford University Press in October 2015.

"Because of his deep experience, both at a research and hands-on level, no one knows more about animal hoarding than Dr. Patronek," stated Elaine Birchall. "We are extremely lucky that he is going to join us on our show, to help us understand and address this very complicated aspect of animal experience."
