Electrical stimulation devices are based on the principle that exposure of bone to an electrical field causes small physical perturbations in the bone, which triggers cell growth. Companies offer several different stimulation methods and designs that vary by different electromagnetic properties and principles employed, as well as by their method of application. The three most common types of electrical stimulation devices used as adjuncts to spinal fusion are surgically implanted stimulators (internal bone stimulators) and two different types of external stimulators (external bone stimulators).
The first type is internal bone stimulators, which are implantable devices that utilize direct current (DC) electrical stimulation and are implanted at the time of the spinal fusion. The second type is external bone stimulators, which are minimally invasive external devices worn outside the skin. One common type of external device utilizes pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF). The newest type, capacitive coupling (CC) devices, delivers constant current to the fusion site.
Although the active mechanism may be different, all spinal electrical stimulation devices aim to augment bone growth and expedite the healing process. For simplicity, spinal electrical bone growth stimulation devices are sometimes referred to as electrical stimulation or spinal stimulation devices.
Electrical stimulation devices are used for stimulating bone growth after a spinal fusion procedure. Spinal electrical bone growth stimulators are often used as an adjunct therapy in order to increase the chance of a successful solid spinal fusion. In the United States, electrical stimulation devices are designed specifically for lumbar and cervical fusions. However, some lumbar devices have historically been used off-label to augment the healing process for cervical fusion procedures.
