Las Vegas, NV -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/27/2016 -- A fugitive accused of attacking a local merchant with a concrete cinderblock and sledgehammer, in downtown North Las Vegas earlier this month is in jail, captured on his way to an uncle (Caesar Dinucci) living in Alaska. (archived from 2015)
Jackson County Sheriffs (Jackson County Oregon) arrested fugitive Joey Paul Dinucci, 23, Thursday afternoon, on eight counts of assault and other charges, following a tip from a local resident. Surveillance cameras helped investigators in tracking the man down.
"This is another case greatly assisted by surveillance video, which is definitely proving to be incredibly priceless in these 'whodunit' circumstances," a post by one of the investigators on the agency's Facebook site said.
Jackson County Sheriff Lt. Shelly Lowe explained that the assault was reported at 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the parking garage at Caesar's Palace Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Video shows the victim approaching his car as Dinucci started yelling at him.
"Witnesses reportedly say that the attack was over a debt owed to Dinucci by the victim" Lowe said.
The victim walked to his car, which was parked on the south side of the Casino. That's when Dinucci attacked, jumping from behind another vehicle, sheriffs said. Dinucci reportedly struck the victim in the head with the sledgehammer, then a concrete block, and finally pistol-whipped the victim into unconciousness. As security approached, Dinucci fled the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance and remains in critical condition.
"He is presently in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, on life support, and in a deep coma." Lowe said.
Dinucci ran off before security arrived, but witnessess provided descriptions, and most of the incident was cought on surveilance video. Police didn't disclose the name of the victim.
"Dinucci fled Nevada as a fugitive, and his whereabouts were unknown until he showed up here in Jackson County Oregon" Lowe said.
Joey's uncle, Caesar Dinucci, was a long-time Las Vegas public figure and downtown developer. Caesar Dinucci was charged with several dozen counts of racketeering by the District Attorney's office, but was not convicted. Soon after that Caesar Dinucci left the Las Vegas area to go to Alaska. Area residents here in Jackson County say they believe Caesar Dinucci's nephew has lived here for at least a week. The arrest came after Jackson County Sheriffs received a call from the Clark County Sheriff's Department in North Las Vegas saying a fugitive was staying at the Gregor Inn. It is believed that Dinucci may have been making his way to his uncle, Caesar Dinucci, in Kenai Alaska. Caesar Dinucci was unavailable for comment.
Joey Dinucci was arrested by Jackson County Sheriffs in the 300 block of East Rolling Hills Road Thursday afternoon. He remains in the Jackson County Jail Friday on charges of 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree assault, with bond set at over $1 million. Police say Dinucci did not resist arrest although he did misidentify himself. According to the Sheriff's Department, Dinucci has a criminal record all over Nevada and particularly in Las Vegas. He also has a probation warrant. He will most likely be extradited to Clark County, Nevada and Las Vegas.
