Most soil issues start with pH problems – the acidity or alkalinity of the dirt. Every state has a Cooperative Extension Agent; the Cooperative Extension Agent can be contacted to check the soil in a particular area. The percentages of sand, silt and clay are evaluated. Once determined, it may take time to get the soil issues ironed out. Remember, lime is not an instant fix! Let the experts at your local Extension office help.

Seeding and Fertilizing: Whether the task at hand is to patch some bare spots or re-plant an entire lawn, the soil must be checked. Grass seed can be applied in March, or when the soil begins to warm (depending on the climate). There are many types of grass seed to choose from such as: quick germination, sun, shade and even play areas. Crabgrass control can be used until the end of April or when the soil temperature reaches 70 to 80 degrees. Weed killers need to be applied while the weeds are in active growth, and can be applied until they stop growing in the fall. Grub controls can be applied May thru August, depending on the type of chemicals they contain. Remember, grub control should be treat from the foundation of the home outward. Grubs infest flower beds as well as lawns, and attract skunks!

Don't scalp the lawn. Never cut more than 1/3 of the lawn growth when mowing. If the lawn is high, it is advisable to cut twice. Raise the cutting height of the mower and bag the clippings, or discharge the clippings until the lawn is at a manageable length.

- Be sure the lawnmower blade is sharpened and balanced correctly

- Water new lawns thoroughly

- For established lawns that must be kept green, water once when the soil becomes dry, but before the grass color begins to change. If the ground is very hard, aerate it before watering, to aid water penetration.

- Water the lawn in early morning, evening or even night-time, to reduce water waste from evaporation.

- Watering once every seven to 10 days is typically sufficient. It is important not to apply too much water. This is wasteful, encourages shallow rooting of the grass and promotes moss and turf diseases. Excessive watering makes the lawn less drought-tolerant.

- Do not use lawn weed killers on drought-affected turf in the autumn. Delay treatments until the following spring, when the grass and weeds are growing vigorously.
