Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/15/2016 -- Most of the diet of humans, including those who are watching their food intake for a particular health concern, are dependent on fish food sources. An article on website Yokogawa emphasized the need for fish farms and aquaculture to obtain the right levels of pH during the operations, and noted the fact that buffering systems can help during the process.

The website mentioned how fish has been known to do their functions in water, and some of these functions include respiration, food intake, growth, waste excretion, salt balance maintenance and reproduction among many others. To promote the safe and healthy processes of these functions, fish farms need to have the right pH levels for these creatures.

pH levels that are too low and too high were regarded as "unsuitable for most aquatic organisms.

SelpHbalance digital pH meter and its buffering system

SelpHbalance offers a product called the digital pH meter that is equipped with six packets for buffer solutions aside from the product itself. These buffer solutions are necessary to sustain accuracy when testing the pH levels of a particular component.

Buffering systems like those of SelpHbalance's digital pH meter are necessary to prevent fluctuations and disturbances when it comes to pH levels in fish farming, the website Yokogawa noted.

"Without some means of storing carbon dioxide released from plant and animal respiration, pH levels may fluctuate in ponds from approximately four to five to over 10 during the day," the article stated. "In recirculating systems, constant fish respiration can raise carbon dioxide levels high enough to interfere with oxygen intake by fish, in addition to lowering the pH of the water."

Function of the buffering system in fish farming

The website identified two major functions of a pH buffering system in fish farming.

One function is to store carbon dioxide in pond production. According to Yokogawa, carbonate buffering systems are essential for fish farmers regardless of their methods to store carbon dioxide to facilitate the safe processes.

"In pond production, where photosynthesis is the primary source of oxygen, carbonates and bicarbonates are storage area for surplus carbon dioxide. By storing carbon dioxide in the buffering system, it is never a limiting factor that could reduce photosynthesis, and in turn, reduce oxygen production," the website noted further.

The second function is to prevent "wide daily fluctuations." The absence of buffering systems can decrease the pH levels at night time to around 4.5 and in some instances, can also increase them to around 10 and more.
