New research creates innovative method for joining tissues & wounds using nanoparticle solution technology rather than sutures
Edmonton, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/25/2014 -- An innovative method to quickly and simply join tissue and close wounds has been discovered and is the subject of a paper published in Nature International Journal of Science in 2013. The paper is entitled ‘Nanoparticle solutions as adhesives for gels and biological tissues.’ The process uses a nanoparticle solution rather than sutures, and wounds that are treated this way not only stop bleeding immediately, but heal quickly and with scarcely a scar or any sign it was even there.
The process is still going through the research and experimentation process but has many exciting potential practical applications, and it is featured this week on Inside Cosmetic Surgery Today on webtalkradio, where show host, Edmonton dermatologist Dr Barry Lycka welcomes Dr Ludwik Leibler, Associate Professor at ESPCI ParisTech, (Paris Institute of Technology), Director of the Soft Matter and Chemistry Laboratory.
In this in-depth interview, Dr Leibler explains the background to the research and outlines what nanoparticles are and how the new process works to ‘glue’ tissues and close wounds. He describes the research that has been done so far and the results of their experiments. The two doctors then consider the very many exciting potential uses for this new process particularly in situations where sutures are difficult or impossible to use, and in the presence of body fluids or lots of blood. The nanoparticle solution also stops the bleeding, as experiments on calf liver have shown. The way in which the wounds heal is also of interest, particularly to Dr Lycka who works with many scar correction patients, using the latest scar correction techniques.
