Leading UK Retail Websites Under Cyber Security Scrutiny

Manchester, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/19/2016 -- New research has uncovered vulnerabilities in the website security of many large UK retail outlets. Stores such as Matalan, Tesco, Topshop and Debenhams came under criticism for not having robust cyber security measures. The investigation was undertaken by security company UpGuard. The research highlights an increasing issue and consumers are now reconsidering using the affected sites. When presented with the issue, most of the companies argued with the findings, stating that they had adequate measures in place chiefly focused data sensitive pages.

Groups were chosen by the Financial Times using the companies high market shares in different retail sectors as criterion for selection. UpGuard assessed and scored websites to ascertain and make clear whether or not they had comprehensive security procedures in place. Sites which were scored below 550 were deemed to require "serious attention." A whopping 15 of the 18 UK companies selected scored below the desired 550 minimum.

A spokesperson for the Safe Deposit Centre commented "The security of any personal data should always be treated as a high priority, regardless of the business type or firm. Customers need assurances that their privacy is taken very seriously in today's day and age and the recent cyber attacks on Talk Talk's website further highlight this need."
