Northbrook, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/17/2014 -- While most authors use their debut novel to merely test the literary waters, Mitchell Karbin uses his first book as an opportunity to experiment with a genre by combining a sensual love story with a suspenseful detective yarn, and then adding a supernatural twist. Karbin’s seamless tale of a family ripped apart by their own secrets and guilt, ordinary people facing their worst fears and desires, has readers voraciously devouring each page in an uncontrollable mania to quickly reach the story’s stunning conclusion.

‘Man Is A Disaster, Air Conditioning Is Divine’ is a unique puzzle; an aptly titled non-sequitur. We all hope that extraordinary circumstances could propel us to heroic and selfless acts. Karbin’s novel let’s us discover not only where we would each draw our own line in the sand, but shocks us into facing the truth about just how far each of us will go; forcing readers to reassess not only the person we think we are, but who we really are.

Synopsis:

Cleva Winters decides that the only way to bring her husband, Charles, back to her is to make him jealous by having an affair. When that fails and she breaks it off, the man Cleva dallied with is furious. He decides to kill Cleva's teenaged daughter, Chloe, in vengeance.

The mysterious Ms. Blake hires private detective Sam Angel to locate Chloe. Sam finds that Cleva is using threats and bribery to prevent anyone from even looking for Chloe, and soon realizes that Chloe's abductor has no fear of consequences and a strange effect on those he is near. Sam determines that Chloe is in deadly danger, and that there is a connection between the Winters, Chloe's antagonist, and the head of the asylum from which Chloe's captor escaped.

When Sam confronts Chloe's kidnaper Chloe not only refuses to escape to safety but professes her love for the man who took her. The climax, in which sacrifices are made and villains, victims, and heroes exchange places, is electrifying.

“The key to this story is that relatable characters are placed in ordinary situations that all of us are familiar with, allowing readers to identify with the characters’ predicament,” explains the author. “But each circumstance turns extreme, and even deadly, as a result of a sequence of thwarted plans and misplaced loyalties, building on each other to create a perfect storm of the bizarre. So these commonplace people, facing extraordinary dangers, amaze themselves by performing deeds that shatter their own idea of who they themselves are. The readers can’t help but use their own values to judge the characters, and in doing so will be forced to a dramatic shift in their own outlook on life.”

Continuing, “Love grows very dark in this story, mixing forbidden passion and vengeance. When two such strong and diverse emotions clash, the difference between devotion and insanity vanishes. Readers will become lost in this maze of misdirection.”

Since its release, the novel has attracted a string of rave reviews.

“I find Karbin very interesting… a must read.” – Z. Adil, A God Of No Religion.

One reviewer comments: “Haunting, gripping, and mesmerizing are just a few words that come to mind to describe "Man Is A Disaster”. I really had to fight myself not to read it in one sitting. Mitch Karbin does it, he baits you with the prologue and then he reels you in and doesn't release you until the final written word of the epilogue. The only negative comment I have is that it had to end. Bravo… a great read.”

Another adds: “Man Is A Disaster, Air Conditioning Is Divine is a taut erotic thriller that had me on the edge of my seat. The gritty noir feel and supernatural elements blended well to make a compelling detective story that I couldn't put down. The characters were well developed and the world Karbin develops is rich and full of possibilities, yet firmly grounded and relatable. With twists and turns that kept me guessing right until the end, this is one you won't want to miss.”
