Genuine vs Static Assessment K-5 Featuring Cathy Fosnot of New Perspectives on Learning To Highlight Illinois Math Conference in July 2017
Wheaton, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/15/2017 -- MathRack is pleased to announce 2017's Midwest Math Conference which offers a superb opportunity for professionals to jump start their learning this summer by joining math educators from across the country. The conference, which takes place on Thursday, July 27, 2017 is an exciting one-day workshop on authentic formative math assessment and is co-sponsored by both MathRack and New Perspectives on Learning. Located at the Hilton in Lisle, IL – approximately 25 miles west of Downtown Chicago – the conference will feature New Perspectives on Leaning's CEO and President Cathy Fosnot whose reputation is well-established amongst math educators nationwide. An award-winning author, Ms. Fosnot speaks around the world on producing vibrant math communities in K-8 classrooms. She is the author of the book series Young Mathematicians at Work and the curriculum series Contexts for Learning Mathematics (Heinemann). Additionally, Ms. Fosnot was the founding director of Mathematics in the City – a national center for professional development at The City College of New York. Her interactive workshop at the conference will be entitled "Genuine vs Static Assessment K-5".
Overall, Midwest Math Conference will focus on bringing together Grades K-5 teachers, coaches and district leaders to explore, develop and implement authentic formative assessments to capture development of content understanding, aligned with the Common Core State Standards. With an emphasis on genuine versus static assessment and expertise guidance from Cathy Fosnot and New Perspectives on Learning, the conference will dig deep into the student-teacher relationship and how to help guide individuals towards a true understanding of the principles of math.
"The common vision about assessment that we all share so deeply is that it needs to inform teaching. Assessment should capture genuine mathematizing, not just answers, nor the verbal prose explaining them," shared MathRack founders and Midwest Math Conference co-sponsors Scott and Lynn Rule. "We need to capture what a child can do and what is on her horizon, rather than only what she cannot do."
Some of the following highlights will be offered at Midwest Math Conference to those in attendance:
- Learn how to assess mathematical activity in an authentic context.
- Observe real-time assessment with children.
- Develop the ability to kidwatch and analyze children's work for the mathematics within.
- Explore the use of 2-pen assessments to capture the development of numeracy.
- Explore digital tools that you can use to capture learning in the moment.
- Leave with tools, measures, rubrics and carefully crafted items as well as the ability to design your own.
