London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/23/2016 -- According to a recent RAC survey, the number of drivers using mobile phones whilst driving is on the rise. The said survey says 31% of motorists admitted to using a handheld phone whilst behind the wheel, and when compared to the 8% who admitted to doing this in 2014, it seems the rise is more drastic than many thought. The survey data states that 14% of drivers said that they have taken a video or photograph while driving and that a further 19% has either posted on social media or sent a text message.

The survey also found that 23% claimed that they used their phones because of an emergency, 21% stated they needed information or directions for their journey, 12% said it was a habit and 7% said that they did it because they knew that they could get away with it. The organisation believes that the largest road safety concern amongst motorists today is the usage of handheld mobile phones and the government is currently looking into toughening the punishments that come along with this in order to deter drivers from using their mobiles.

A spokesperson from car and van hire in Loughton company Fair Rent was keen to comment saying, "It is vital that everyone realises that using a handheld phone while behind the wheel is illegal and adhere to this completely, not only can fines and punishments such as disqualification take place as result of this but even worse people can get severely injured.
