The most common types of networking cables include Cat5, Cat5e and Cat6 cords. "While they all look identical on the exterior, there are differences to each of them," Fcasni said. Cat5e and Cat6 cables are more modern updates to Cat5 cables, and are a bit faster and more efficient, with less interference.
The reason why Cat5, Cat5e and Cat6 cables cap out at around 100 meters is because of a phenomenon that occurs in physics called attenuation. When a flux (such as a data transmission) travels through a medium (such as a Cat5e cable), it will lose intensity as it moves away from its point of origin.
