Toyota Reclaims The Title of World's Largest Automaker
A year after Toyota’s production was hurt by natural disasters, they rebound and regain the title of world’s largest car maker.
Harrisonburg, VA -- (SBWire) -- 05/31/2012 --In an impressive feat, Toyota has reclaimed the crown for the world’s largest automaker from General Motors last month. All this when just a year ago Toyota’s production was hurt badly during the natural disaster in the East.
Toyota held the top spot from 2008 to 2010, but lost it to GM after the Japanese earthquake and then flooding in Thailand seriously disrupted production. However, after selling nearly 2.5 million cars through the first quarter in 2012 compared to GM’s 2.28 million, and Volkswagen’s 2.19 million, Toyota is back and, apparently, stronger than ever.
This is mainly due to Toyota’s Prius and other fuel efficient cars that the Japanese automaker offers. The Prius has sold more units than the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt combined. With gas prices still high, the demand for fuel-efficient vehicles is soaring. Now that Toyota has the Prius Plug In and RAV4 EV releasing soon, Toyota looks to have a strong hold on the title of top automaker in the world.
