President Obama Proposes Cash for Caulkers Program to Help Homeowners Invest in Energy Improvements

Premier Indoor Comfort Systems is providing consumers with information on energy savings ideas and services.

Woodstock, GA -- (SBWire) -- 12/12/2009 -- President Obama has proposed a new program for homeowners that would provide monetary incentives to make their home more energy efficient. If passed by Congress this bill could provide up to $12,000 per household to buy more energy efficient equipment, add insulation and numerous other energy saving programs. This is an idea that Congress started looking at last month and has been gaining support. In Atlanta, Premier Indoor Comfort Systems, a leading HVAC service and repair company can provide consumers with information on energy savings ideas and services.

Details of the plan have not been released. There are still questions about whether homeowners would have to pay for the costs themselves and get re-imbursement or will big retailers or private contractors fund the initial work. The plan will likely create a new program where private contractors conduct home energy audits, buy the necessary gear and install it, according to a staffer on the Senate Energy Committee and Steven Nadel, Director at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. Consumers might be eligible for a 50% rebate on both the price of the equipment and the installation, up to $12,000, said Nadel. So far, there is no income restriction on who is eligible. Homes that take full advantage of the program could see their energy bills drop as much as 20%, he said.

There are some first steps that homeowners should implement. Almost all homes should have a programmable thermostat to turn down the heat or the air-conditioning when nobody is home. Other simple steps can include wrapping a water heater with an insulation blanket and replacing heating and cooling filters. Next on the list would be sealing easily accessible holes in air ducts, which can cost just a few hundred dollars and pay for itself in a few years. “We support the idea of any program that provides incentives to consumers to make their homes more energy- efficient,” Atlanta-based Home Depot said in a statement. “A national program on this topic would help bring visibility to the simple things that can be done to reduce household energy use.”
