Something to Live For: New Book of Short Prose & Poetry Urges Readers to Take Charge of Their Fate
Written by Garrett S. L. King, Jr. and focusing on his own tumultuous life, ‘Something to Live For’ fuses short stories, poetry and a biography to serve as an example for taking responsibility for one’s actions. While the author worked solidly with just a high school education and ultimately ended up in jail, his renewed character is now serving as a bold inspiration to others.
Kansas City, MO -- (SBWire) -- 01/30/2014 --Even though Garrett S. L. King, Jr. had little formal education, he loved his job at the meat department. The last thing expected to do was unsuccessfully rob it and wind up in jail. However, this harsh reality has been turned into a positive – as King recounts his life through prose and poetry for the benefit of others.
‘Something to Live For’ is powerful to say the least.
“It’s my entire life story, told through short stories, poetry and factual verses. Readers are taken back to 1997, as I started my first job at an apple market. I knew how much my mom needed the help and was prepared to do all I could to assist with the family finances. My unwavering willingness to work finally landed me in the meat department, where I worked for the next eight years. I knew they’d never teach me the formal butchery trade – but I was very content earning $200 a week,” says King.
Continuing, “However, this radically changed after I saw someone robbing the store one night. With little else to do in my life, I knew this would shake things up. My own unsuccessful attempt saw me set off the alarm, get shot in the backside by Police and incarcerated for three years.”
While many would see this as the end of their integrity, King’s sharp tenacity and drive turned his experience into a positive.
“A few months after getting out of jail in 2009, I began writing this book. In fact, I also enrolled in college and used my last student loan check to finance the book’s publication. My main goal is to now help others change their own lives,” he adds.
The themes in the book are hugely uplifting. Using his own life as an example, the verses and stories within ‘Something to Live For’ are helping readers from all walks of life recognize that their fate in life is to be determined only by them, even in the face of unfair words and actions from others.
“It can truly change someone’s life. I’ve made the mistakes and want my readers to learn from them. This will allow them to avoid a similar fate and live a life that’s everything they want it to be,” King adds.
