Fighting for Freedom and General Washington: Dad's New Book & Publishing Venture Address 'Missing Link' in Nation's Curriculum - Patriotic Literacy
Founded by professor Michael Justin Lee, Capital Stewardship Publishing has the bold goal of helping children to appreciate the glory of the United States and the greatness of the nation’s founders and present-day military heroes. ‘Fighting for Freedom and General Washington’ is the company’s first book. It fuses action and adventure with lessons of history about the American Revolution. This is the first time such a venture has been attempted in the literary world, but one that is critical at a time when the true meaning of patriotism is lost to millions of youngsters.
Washington, DC -- (SBWire) -- 07/15/2014 --Michael Justin Lee has never taken America’s freedoms for granted. Born in Hong Kong after his family was forced to flee Mao’s China, Lee considers himself truly blessed to have grown up on American soil. While patriotism runs deep through his blood as a result, Lee has become acutely aware that his children and their entire generation know too little about our nation’s struggles and triumphs. He has therefore taken matters into his own hands.
Capital Stewardship Publishing has a simple mandate – to put unapologetically patriotic literature into the hands of the nation’s children. Lee is passionate about assisting younger generations to cherish the freedoms that others before them have fought and died for. The company’s first book is ‘Fighting for Freedom and General Washington’ which melds adventure and history in whisking young readers back over two hundred years to join General Washington in his war for America’s independence.
Synopsis:
Thirteen year old twins from Virginia, Amanda and Alexander Lee, have yearned for adventure off the family farm all their young lives. Their opportunity arises when fellow Virginian, George Washington, is commissioned as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army in 1775. Three years too young to enlist, Alexander devises an audacious deception to serve under General Washington. Meanwhile, Amanda devises an even greater deception and fights with many of the Revolutionary War’s greatest heroes. Through the struggle and turmoil of the American Revolution, Amanda and Alexander spend the entirety of their teen years in service to their country, earning an education in honor and patriotism.
“There is far too little Historical Fiction for Young Adults and almost nothing of what I call Patriotic Fiction,” explains Lee, a renowned professor who has taught at six universities in the nation’s capital region. “I intend to change that. Capital Stewardship Publishing’s books will fuse action-oriented explorations of teenage strivings and longings with actual American history. I don’t just see this endeavor as important. I think it’s critically urgent. Our nation’s young people are not being taught patriotism and are therefore not fully valuing the greatness of our country.”
Continuing, “We have big plans for the future. We are already at work on the next three volumes in the series which will involve World War One, World War Two and the Civil War. Although this genre is relatively new, we are rapidly gaining ground by not only encouraging general literacy but by promoting patriotic literacy.”
Early reviews for Lee’s work have been overwhelmingly positive. Pacific Book Review comments, “Indeed, Lee has done an amazing job of writing a historical novel for young adults that will teach, inspire, and entertain. In a market that seems dominated by zombies and vampires, ‘Fighting for Freedom and General Washington’ will definitely appeal to more conservative readers who will appreciate the values that form the basis for the work. Parents--especially those who are homeschooling or perhaps simply want to spur some interest in American history among their children--will find this novel a perfect starting point for discussion or perhaps a companion to related study.”
Laurie Cockerell, the founder of www.PatrioticChildrensBooks.com adds, “Oh, how I wish this book had been around when I was studying American history! Instead of memorizing dates and battles, I could have read all about the American Revolution in this riveting story about 13 year old twins who join in the fight for American independence.”
Kirkus Reviews wrote of his earlier book, ‘Heroes of American Freedom’: “Overall, the beauty of this collection is in how it offers historical anecdotes directly from the pens and mouths of great American leaders…it’s an illuminating journey through United States history told via historical writings and speeches.”
