Aquavus: A Revolutionary System for Purifying Seawater and Unsafe Water
British scientists and engineers have invented a system that uses ultrasound waves to desalinate and purify water from the ocean.
Sutton, UK -- (SBWire) -- 11/11/2014 --It’s no secret that a shortage of clean drinking water is a major issue all over the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), unsafe drinking water was responsible for nearly a half million deaths in India in 2010. The Blue Planet Network, a worldwide organization focused on safe water supplies, reports that unsafe water kills 200 children every hour, filling half of the world’s hospital beds.
In addition, scientists have predicted that drinkable water could be in scarce supply by 2025.
Paul Rewrie is one of the leaders of a British company that may very well have the answer to this dilemma. Aquavus is a new technology that uses ultrasound to purify and desalinate seawater and clean contaminated water.
One unit can purify 3,000 liters (about 800 gallons) a day. According to the United Nations Development Program the average water use per day per person in France is 280 liters, and in Germany it's 180 liters.
However, the scale of water usage in a village in the developing world is much different. According to the United Nations each villager uses about 20 liters of water a day for drinking, cooking, and bathing, which is typical in a developing village. A single Aquavus unit could supply enough clean water to support the needs of 150 people per day.
The system can be operated using waste heat and renewable energy, which reduces costs for communal use. This ensures that energy costs are kept low, which means this revolutionary water purification method can be efficiently deployed on a large, commercial scale.
“There is a massive water crisis in our world,” said Paul Rewrie, the Director of Aquavus. “You may think that water issues are somebody else’s problem. But in a few years it will be yours, too. This is a revolutionary water purification system that provides cheap, clean water for the world.”
“Current purification methods are old, expensive and leave waste that is harmful to our environment. The Aquavus system uses powerful ultrasound to blast impure water into particles of less than 10 microns. These micro-particles evaporate and condense to form pure water. This process leaves the salts, contaminants and sediments behind.”
Aquavus, however, is still in the developmental stages. “Our alpha prototype machine proved that our technology works in lab conditions,” said Rewrie. “Now we need to build three beta prototypes, and the projected cost is $300,000. After the beta prototype phase, we will build the final Industrial machines, which will lead to the licensing of our ground-breaking technology across the world.”
In order to generate this capital, he and his team have launched an Indiegogo campaign, which can be viewed at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/aquavus-ultrasound-desalination-and-purification
Donations of any amount are welcome. Those who contribute $50 will receive an Aquavus baseball cap. For $75, you can get an “I Love Drinking Water” T-shirt.
“Our goal is to keep the final products at prices below $1,000 for the seawater unit and $500 for the artesian and surface water units,” Rewrie said. This is much cheaper than any other existing systems of water desalination and purification producing the same liters per hour (LPH) of water per unit.”
One of the members of the Aquavus team is Dr. Ravi Kumar, who wrote and directed Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain, a film starring Martin Sheen, Kal Penn and Mischa Barton. The movie, which is being released worldwide this year, is inspired by the 1984 Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, India, an industrial accident that killed 10,000 people and injured more than 558,000.
As a result of this tragic incident, the groundwater in Bhopal still has concentrations of carbon tetrachloride that are 2,400 times above WHO guidelines. Hence Dr. Kumar’s interest and support of this project.
“With Aquavus, we plan to provide clean drinking water to the survivors of this disaster,” said Dr. Ravi Kumar.
