McAllen, TX -- (SBWire) -- 02/16/2015 --With February as the month for National Children's Dental Health, parents are highly encouraged to have their children embrace proper oral health by visiting their family dentist regularly. That to promote good oral health in youngsters, this year's campaign slogan is to 'defeat monster mouth', in aims to raise awareness about the essentiality of oral health in children.

In coordination with American Dental Association (ADA), the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry reach out to many parents to have their children no later than twelve months old, to get the first dental check-up once their first tooth appears. Having an early interaction, in regards to oral health, could help in establishing a pleasing, comfortable and friendly rapport between the family dentist, the child and the parent. And this also, could facilitate initial identification of dental problems that children might encounter if these are neglected.

Taking care of the primary teeth is very important. These primary teeth or the baby teeth, as people know it, aids children in chewing their food naturally. It will help them in learning how to speak clearly and in holding space to the jaw which will serve as a pathway for the appearance of adult's teeth in later years. Children activities like sucking on pacifiers, fingers, toys and other objects that could calm children and have them the feeling of security are some of the dental causing problems if this habit were not ceased in between the age of two and four years. This may impede the growth of the mouth and the permanent teeth's alignment. And once children had teeth appear on their gums, parents can start cleaning it by using 'smear' twice a day, with fluoridated toothpaste in the size of a grain of rice.

Grain-sized toothpaste is enough for children up to two years old since they still haven't learned how to rinse effectively, and they might end up swallowing the mouth rinse instead of spitting it out. And when it comes for the toothpaste to be used for children, ask the most trusted family dentist and also check the manufacturer's label for some precautions.

According to the Department of Health, aside to the initial dental checkup for children, in order to reduce the children's risk of having tooth decay, they recommend to help children develop the habit of brushing and flossing, limit their consumption of sugary foods and beverages, limit their in-between meal snacks (if children crave for a snack, give them nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables), and always schedule a regular visit to a family dentist.
